Gordon and Eleanor Hunter

James Gordon Hunter o.r.h.

Known to friends and family as Gordon.

The land rover and caravan were a common sight; parked neatly outside the castle. Permission for this came from Neil Hunter 29th Laird of Hunterston and Clan Chief of all by the name of Hunter: who in his time became very friendly with Gordon and his good lady Eleanor.

Friendships founded at Hunterston really do span lifetimes. In 1986 at a ceilidh venued in the big hoose. The Chief on his welcoming address went to great lengths to assure that all present were indeed his extended family: and that's how it's been ever since.

Gordon's arrival at the clan lands in 1984 preceded my membership by two years. When we met I knew that I was in the company of a man who had a great zest for life. And he proved that, when one day to the entire Clan Council's amazement, he after an operation to replace a knee joint, drove from home at Newcastle to Hunterston and climbed the turnpike stairs of the castle; aided by two walking sticks and a constant barrage of encouragement from Eleanor, and all this was to attend a Council meeting. Such was that man's resolve.

Good times we all had at events such as: the Burn's Suppers at the Gretna Green hotel. Gordon loved to dance:
nae cotillion Brent new frae France,
but hornpipes, Strathspeys jigs an' reels.
Put life an mettle to his heels,

and with occasional saunters to the bar Gordon's dancing got even better.
Proud as punch we were in 2000 and 2001 as Standard Bearers we marched on Flodden's Field. That was another good night at Cornfield hotel at Coldstream.

At the Clan Dinner venue in the Royal Scots Club Edinburgh, Thursday 23rd July this year [2009] our Clan Officer Ian Hunter, in an after dinner address to the company could only remark on the two vacant chairs which were set amongst us.
Seats which had been reserved for Eleanor and her man.
