I am the grandson of Ernestine Hunter (maiden name)and son of Ernest Noah. When my father told me of our history as the royal huntsman I had to learn more. I attend the Hunter family reunion every year in Brookville Indiana. I am merrying a girl who is a desendent of the Stewart clan and is in some way a desendent to Mary Queen of Scotts in which our family served onder.

I am just starting to search on my family. My great grandfather was William A. Hunter; he was born in Jackson County, Missouri in 1841. His parents may have been the first members of my immediate family in the States. I have been told of a Hunter linen mill or factory in the Glasgow area; possibly in the early 1800's. Does anyone have info on that story?

I am a retired U.S. Army officer and visited Hunterston Castle in 1986, when I was stationed in Germany. Several years ago, I married a lady who is a direct decendant in the Montgomery family line. Her genealogy work has recently discovered a direct link back to Jonet (Janet) Montgomerie, daughter of John Montgomerie of Giffen. Our records indicate Jonet married Robert Hunter (15th Laird) in the early 1500s. My Hunter family records track back through John Hunter, who immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in about 1780 and settled in Berkley Springs (then called Bath), West Virginia, Five previous generations in John's family lived in Northern Ireland, and descended from Francis Hunter, the second son of Patrick Hunter (19th Laird). If our work is correct, Debbie and I should have shared the same grandfather, 17 generations ago! |

I have heard stories all of my life about the Hunters, but after visiting the Hunter Clan site, it has all come to life! My brothers and I were fitted for kilts around 15 years ago. We were under the impression that we had our clan tartan. The tartan we have is a far darker blue with a fine red and green check, but the one on this site look almost aqua.
Have we been sold the incorrect kilts?
2/
My father told me that the name Hunter was originally a French name and changed to Hunter. It sounded like Venture, but I cannot be sure as my father died some years ago. I was also told that, some of the young men from the clan were sent to Normandy in France to improve Hunting techniques. This relationship with the French played some part in developing “the auld alliance”.
Is any of the above true or was my father kidding with me? |
